THE HOME OF THE HEART
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are the source and origin of Yoga Philosophy, and also its most important reference text. No study of Yoga is deemed complete without the study of this timeless masterpiece. Presented in a simple yet aphoristic style it offers a depth of teachings that no other Yoga text even approaches. It covers every fundamental aspect of Yoga philosophy, and also offers the foundation principles of its practices to achieve its goal. This goal takes the form of a spiritual journey into, and residing in, what Patanjali describes as the Home of the Heart.
However, many of these concepts remain misinterpreted, as Patanjali presents his teachings through codified allegories, often understood only through the help of a teacher deeply rooted in the Yoga tradition. Luckily the past century witnessed one such teacher in the form of Yogacarya Sri T Krishnamacharya, who is now heralded as the single most influential master on much of modern day yoga practice. Krishnamacharya not only understood the depth of Patanjali’s teachings, but also made it practically applicable throughout the domains of health, healing and spirituality. Though his work in the area of Health and Healing is extremely popular, it is his adeptness in the spiritual domain that offers a platform for the future.
To elaborate his experience of the Yoga Sutras in the spirtual domain, Krishnamacharya wrote a beautiful commentary and called it the Yoga Valli. This text offers unique ideas that make it practical and relevant for our modern times. Yet to be published, it still remains in the custody of his son and primary student, TKV Desikachar, who is working on translating this masterpiece along with his own son Kausthub Desikachar.
Kausthub Desikachar will present these very advanced teachings of Krishnamacharya, particularly by bringing them together with some of the most important commentaries on The Yoga Sutra by masters such as Veda Vyasa. Every Sutra will be taken word by word, and discussed in depth.
This series of seminars will happen annually and will be of particular interest to Yoga Teacher Trainers and experienced Yoga Teachers, who are interested in being part of an ongoing Yoga Sutra study group. Chanting and meditative sessions will be included. Some of the practice sessions will be led by assistant faculty, who have trained with TKV & Kausthub Desikachar.
